Le Musée des arts et métiers, Paris

writing

The first afternoon brought me to  Le Musée des arts et métiers. “We close at 6”, the cashier told me, “but wait 5 minutes, and we let you in for free.” And so I did.

Foucault pendulum

The Foucault pendulum  suspended from a cord of 67 meters attached to a ceiling swung freely backwards and forwards. If I had aligned myself exactly in front of the pendulum, and if I stayed there all night , slowly moving with the brass sphere, aligning and realigning my body in front of the movement of the pendulum ,   I would have noticed the floor move, being twisted around by the nightly rotation of earth.
